The Andy Kesteloo Memorial Project Award

The Andy Kesteloo Memorial Student Project Award is named in memory of Andy Kesteloo, a visionary green building advocate who shared his commitment to sustainability with humour, insight, and passion. The award is open to either a current undergraduate or graduate student or student who has completed their project within two calendar years from Award submission deadline.

This award recognizes a student project that demonstrates leadership, innovation and inspiration with a creative vision for the future of sustainable design in the field of green building and communities.

The criteria

Student project should (but is not limited to):

  • Be an idea for a building, any component of a building, a green product, or any part of the construction process.
  • Clearly convey the fundamentals of sustainability by using innovative strategies and realistic solutions.
  • Present a creative vision for the future of green buildings and neighbourhoods.
  • Articulate the project’s key features and their environmental and human health benefits.
  • Demonstrate the value and the importance of integrated/synergistic system design.

The award

  • $2,000 cash award.
  • One complimentary pass to Building Lasting Change 2025
  • Featured article in CAGBC’s special Ask the Expert Award Series, interviewed by CAGBC.
  • Award recognition in a media release and a trophy.

Eligibility

Must be either a current undergraduate or graduate student or have completed their project within two calendar years from Award submission deadline and their program of study is involved directly or indirectly with the built environment. Some examples include programs related to: Architecture, Engineering, Urban Planning, Interior Design, Community Planning, Sustainability Management, Supply Chain Management, Construction, and Trades.

Project groups must select one group representative. A project award can only be awarded to one group member.

Submission Requirements

All project requirements must be submitted online. Students can reuse course materials where applicable but should do their best to adjust these items so that requirements are met.

  • Personal profile form
  • Proof of full time, undergraduate or graduate enrollment in a post-secondary institution
    Please provide a registration receipt, a current transcript, or a letter from your department.
  • Maximum 2000-word essay about your project which may be modified from coursework:
    • How your project satisfies the objective and criteria of this award (listed above).
    • Key project features and intended positive environmental and social impacts.
    • Your design approach (process, goals and objectives) and any lessons learned.
    • Your project’s feasibility and applicability to a real-world need.
  • Green building community involvement reference letter:
    This should be a signed PDF written by a third party that demonstrates a commitment to sustainability outside the classroom.
  • A maximum of four project posters which may be modified from coursework
    Posters must be submitted as an electronic PDF or JPEG.

Finalists

The top two submissions are required to submit an informal video of five minutes or less addressing the merits of your idea and the inspiration behind it. Provide the judges with some insight into your personal contributions and aspirations in terms of green building. Once selected, you will be provided with an outline that further articulates the terms of this video component.

  • Competition opens:  January 15, 2024
  • Deadline for submissions:  June 7, 2024 
  • Top two finalists notified to submit video:  June 28, 2024
  • Video submissions due:  July 12, 2024
  • Winner notified by:  July 31, 2024
