Projects seeking to register under Zero Carbon Building – Design Standard v2 should do so soon. Registration for this version of ZCB-Design will close on Thursday September 29th at midnight. While projects that wish to use v2 must register before that date, they will have until September 29, 2024 to submit their design for certification review.

All projects that register for ZCB-Design after September 29, 2022 must use the latest version, ZCB-Design v3. Version 3 of the Standard launched in June, and we are already seeing new certifications being awarded.

Version 3 provides projects with increased flexibility to meet thermal energy demand intensity (TEDI) requirements and incorporates important changes that address embodied carbon and limit onsite combustion. Any projects currently registered under ZCB-Design v2 may move to the new version at any time to take advantage of these changes.

The ZCB-Design Standard guides the design of new buildings and the retrofit of existing ones so they can achieve zero carbon operations. It helps project teams evaluate the anticipated carbon emissions from building operations and guides them to carefully consider the embodied carbon of construction materials, refrigerants used in HVAC equipment, building airtightness, and strategies to minimize electrical grid impacts.

ZCB-Design provides enough flexibility to be used for retrofits and new construction of just about any kind of building, as well as for newly constructed additions and attached buildings.
