LEED for healthy, efficient and resilient homes
LEED certified homes are designed to provide clean indoor air and ample natural light while ensuring comfort and good health by using safe building materials. By reducing energy and water consumption, LEED for homes can lower utility bills, lowering the cost of home ownership.
LEED homes are designed and constructed to:
- Be more resilient in the face of changing weather patterns
- Maximize indoor fresh air and minimize exposure to airborne toxins and pollutants for better health outcomes
- Use less energy and water with certified homes using on average 20 to 30% less energy than non-green homes
- Deliver value, with very little markup versus non-green homes and opportunities for incentives and rebates for green homes.
LEED v4 covers several residential project types:
- LEED BD+C: Homes and Multifamily Lowrise applies to single family homes and multi-family residential buildings of three or less storeys
- LEED BD+C: Multifamily Midrise applies to residential buildings of four or more storeys

LEED v4.1 Residential
LEED v4 introduced important new concepts for building sustainability and remains available today. The experience of LEED v4 users is the basis for LEED v4.1.
Project teams across the country are adopting the LEED v4.1 Residential: Single Family Homes. Credits with the highest value to consumers are prioritized, such as energy and water savings; improved comfort, health and well-being; and green and healthy materials. Options have also been added to lower both hard and soft costs to achieve certification.
Multifamily projects continue to use the LEED v4 rating system; however, they can substitute credits from LEED v4.1 Residential: Multifamily Homes to benefit from new features.

Getting Started
To ensure the success of every project, Homes and Midrise programs use a network of Providers to provide local, on the ground support. Project owners must contact a Provider to work with prior to registering their project. After determining which rating system you will use register your project in LEED Online. You can refer to the Marketing Support page for information on promoting your project.
The Credit Library is a database of all LEED v4 credits, prerequisites, and Minimum Program Requirements. It provides credit requirements, local guidance, forms, calculators, and other resources. It’s also your portal to the web-based reference guide.
Alternative compliance paths (ACPs) provide project teams the flexibility to use a locally-relevant equivalent in credit requirements.
